Sunday January 18, 2009
Nicole Cassidy and Nicholas McGrath Sunlovers Terrace, Daydream Island Resort.
LIKE something straight out of a romantic comedy, Nicole met Nick at a school disco when they were both 15. Their eyes met across the hall and after some heavy flirting, Nick asked Nicole out on a date. "He gave me his number and I called him the next day to see if he was serious and when he said yes I hung up straight away because I didn't know what to say," Nicole says. The couple wound up dating for eight years and in September 2007, Nick, a 24-year-old electrician, arranged for a seaplane to fly them from Rose Bay to lunch at the Cottage Point Inn on the Hawkesbury River. A walk along the water followed their lunch date and Nicole, a 23-year-old child-care worker, began mucking around with Nick, pretending to push him into the water. "He gave me this look. I'd never seen it before and then he suddenly proposed. The ring was clenched in his hand and he'd almost dropped it," Nicole says. They were married in a glass chapel which overlooked the Whitsundays, in front of 76 guests. Each guest received a glass jar filled with the couple's favourite lollies as bombonieres and Nicole's bridesmaids were each presented with a silver compact mirror. Nick's boys received stubbie holders. Nick says: "Everyone kept commenting that the wedding was 'very us', which was true. We like to keep it simple but we gave the day an elegant twist." The couple spent a week on Hayman Island for their honeymoon. What was the highlight?Nick I think it was watching Nicole walk down the aisle. I had a smile on my face that I just couldn't remove because she looked gorgeous.Nicole The speeches, including Nick's, my dad's and Nick's dad's. They all used lovely quotes that made everyone go "ahh". It really made your heart melt. What do you love most about your partner?Nick I love Nicole for who she is.Nicole I love the trust that we have for one another. The dressA pure-silk gown by Clarissa Grace with a tulle, boned bodice and a French-lace trim at the hip and bustline. A soft-pink bow was threaded through the waist and tied at the back. Bridesmaids Sarah Kenaly, Errin Schonbucher, Melissa Purches, Jessica Krstanoska and Chantel Parker wore various sorbet-coloured chiffon frocks made by a friend, Sondra Denning. The flowersThe Daydream Island Resort and Spa organised a posy for Nicole that consisted of cream, soft-pink and white roses and blush-pink lilies. The flower girls carried soft-pink baskets filled with blush-pink lilies and each bridesmaid carried a posy of roses similar to Nicole's.The cakeA three-tier, double-layered cake with ganache icing and iced lilies by Crystalbrook Patisseries on the Whitsundays. Each tier was a different type of mud cake: white chocolate, caramel and chocolate.
